Taos Spirit Carvings

In the beginning I did not know where this would lead us. I had my class assemble around a piece of local juniper I had milled on a diagonal as pictured on the right. I asked them what they saw in the grain of the wood. They saw a Madonna and Child. So I took out my handy Sharpie marker and laid out the image and proceeded to carve it.

Although my students all picked various subjects for their own carving, one of my former students, David Chavez thought I should pursue the religious/spiritual aspect and thus was the creation of the “Taos Spirit Carvings”.

The series consist of various spiritual and religious subjects all carved from diagonal slabs of local native juniper found here in northern New Mexico

This is a series which originally started out as being a carving demonstration for my students
